The Need For Supplementation

Lately, there has been a barrage of articles through various media sources attacking the safety of supplements. Many times, medical doctors who have little or no knowledge of nutrition are quoted as saying that supplements, particularly herbs, are either dangerous or simply ineffective. Some articles call for the need to have FDA regulation.

It is necessary to understand the full context in which such an issue exists. First and foremost, let us address the primary issue as to whether or not supplementation is necessary. In considering this issue, one needs to be aware of the environment in which we live. Most of the layers of our topsoil, from which plants derive their nutrients, are currently depleted. Compounding that problem is the use of herbicides and pesticides in an attempt to make plants grow faster and seemingly stronger as well as more aesthetically appealing.

Next, it is important to realize that supplementation is a science which needs to be understood before being undertaken.
For this you may choose to consult with a nutritionist. Or you may do some research on your own. For some ideas on nutrition books, refer to the RESOURCES section.

For starters, do understand that, in the arena of herbs, there are three basic categories: poisonous (toxic), medicinal (semi-toxic) and food-grade (non-toxic). Never assume that all products labeled as "natural" are necessarily healthful. But also, just because one herb may create unhealthful side effects (e.g. ephedra) does not mean that all herbs are to be avoided. Many herbal supplements provide significant benefits that cannot be attained merely through "proper diets."

More information will be added to this topic at this site over the next few weeks. In the meantime, I will conclude by saying that:

a) supplementation is essential in light of our environmental problems; and
b) educate yourself as to the more healthful options. Consider consulting with a certified/licensed nutritionist.
