Question:

I always heard that if you eat a well-balanced diet, there is no need for any other source(s) of nutrients. Are supplements necessary? If so, are they safe?

Answer:

With all the environmental issues that exist today, from pesticides and herbicides to the depletion of our topsoil, it is nearly impossible to have what is truely a well-balanced diet. Therefore, supplementation is important. It is critical, however, to approach this intelligently. Never assume that just any supplement is good. Also avoid the misconception that if something is sold at a healthfood store, it must automatically be healthful. The best first step is to consult with a nutritionist to understand what is best for your individual needs.

Question:

In order to lose weight quickly, I was told to take a supplement containing ephedra. Does it work?

Answer:

Yes, but don't use it. While ephedra (derivative of the medicinal herb, ma huang) speeds up metabolism, it also speeds up blood pressure and heart rate. This, obviously, is not good for people with hypertension. But even people without any health conditions should never consume anything that can eventually lead to heart problems. Stay with the healthiest weight-loss options of exercise and proper nutrition. Not only would these approaches help you to lose weight, but they would help you to live longer and healthier.
